Police Mum on ‘Ghost’ Boat

Questions are mounting over an uncrewed boat discovered near South Beach, behind the Monrovia Central Prison, as the Liberia National Police (LNP) remains largely silent on the outcome of an investigation announced after the vessel was found on September 10, 2026.

The mysterious vessel arrived without anyone on board, prompting the police to announce that an investigation had been launched to establish its identity, ownership, origin and how it reached Liberia’s shoreline.

The LNP said relevant security agencies were collaborating to determine the circumstances surrounding the boat’s arrival and its movements around the South Beach area.

However, authorities have yet to publicly provide substantive findings from that investigation.

More than three weeks after the discovery, key questions surrounding the vessel remain unanswered, including who owns it, where it came from, who last operated it, how it reached Monrovia and why it was found without a crew.

The location of the discovery has further heightened public interest. The boat was reportedly found close to the Monrovia Central Prison, where several local and foreign nationals connected to Liberia’s ongoing cocaine investigation are being held.

The cocaine case follows a reported US$336 million drug seizure, one of the country’s most closely watched ongoing criminal investigations.

There is, however, no official evidence at this point linking the unmanned boat to the cocaine investigation, and the LNP has not publicly alleged that the vessel was used in connection with any criminal activity.

While the police have not publicly established ownership, a Canadian national identified as “Charlie” has reportedly claimed that the vessel belongs to him.

According to the reported claim, the boat was acquired for mineral exploration and sand-sampling activities in Liberia.

That claim has not been independently verified by the authorities, and it remains unclear whether the individual has provided documentation establishing ownership or explaining the vessel’s movements.

Additional allegations have also circulated linking the boat to Riverside Resort and Nigerian businessman C. Nelson Oniyama.

Government authorities have not publicly confirmed those claims.

Photos reportedly showing the vessel tied to a berth at Riverside Resort have also circulated. However, the circumstances surrounding the photographs ,including when the vessel was there, who brought it there and for what purpose remain unclear.

The absence of a detailed police update has left a growing information gap around a case that initially prompted official security attention.

Authorities have not said whether the vessel was examined for evidence, whether its registration or ownership documents were recovered, or whether any individual has been questioned in connection with its arrival.

It is also unclear whether Liberia’s maritime and port authorities had any prior record of the vessel entering the country’s waters.

For now, the boat remains at the center of competing claims and unanswered questions, but without an official determination linking it to any criminal activity.

The central questions remain: Who owns the boat? Where did it come from? Who last operated it? How did it reach Monrovia? Why was it found without a crew? And what, if anything, have investigators established since its discovery?

As public speculation continues, attention is now turning to the LNP and other relevant security agencies for clarity on the status of the investigation.
