The Chairman of the Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Taskforce (AREPT), Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin, has vowed to defend the guilty verdicts against eight defendants in a landmark public corruption case if appeals are taken to the Supreme Court.
“When they go to the Supreme Court, we will equally go there and defeat them there,” Martin declared, describing the verdicts as a significant achievement in the fight for accountability.
Following weeks of testimony, documentary evidence, and rebuttal proceedings, the jury convicted eight of 13 defendants, including former Foreign Affairs Minister Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah and former Internal Affairs Minister Varney A. Sirleaf.
Three defendants were acquitted, while verdicts for two others remained inconclusive.
Martin said AREPT remains committed to pursuing accountability and recovering unlawfully acquired public assets through lawful procedures.
