Liberian-American activist Norris Johnson has called on the government to ensure accountability, transparency, and the rule of law following the reported arrest of more than 65 Chinese nationals during a recent security operation.
In a statement addressed to Liberians, Johnson commended national security and law enforcement personnel for the operation but stressed that arrests must be followed by credible investigations and legal proceedings.
He urged the government to disclose the findings of the investigation, clarify the alleged offenses, and ensure that suspects are prosecuted where sufficient evidence exists.
Johnson also questioned the country’s preparedness to detect and prevent organized criminal activities, calling for stronger oversight of security institutions and greater accountability in the justice system.
He raised concerns about reports of individuals operating multiple WhatsApp accounts, including allegations of one person using as many as 20 accounts, and urged telecommunications companies, regulators, and law enforcement agencies to strengthen identity verification and safeguards against fraud.
However, he cautioned that possessing multiple accounts does not, by itself, constitute evidence of criminal activity.
The activist further emphasized the need for the government to manage the diplomatic implications of the reported arrests without compromising Liberia’s sovereignty or the equal application of its laws.
Johnson warned against allowing the incident to fuel hostility toward Chinese nationals or any other foreign community, emphasizing that law-abiding individuals deserve protection regardless of nationality.
He argued that Liberia’s development depends on responsible leadership, effective institutions, and the consistent enforcement of laws.
According to Johnson, public confidence in government must be measured by concrete results, transparent investigations, and accountability rather than public announcements of arrests.
He urged authorities to uphold due process and ensure that justice is administered without fear or favor.
