Teacher Shortages in Core Subjects Hit AML School System as Management Remains Tight-lipped

An investigation by Verity News has uncovered a dossier of leaked documents and a video revealing teacher shortages at the ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) School System. Evidence shows that several weeks into the academic year, students remain without teachers for core subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, Science, Economics, Literature, Social Studies, among others. A teacher confiding in Verity News said, “Since July 14, 2026, about seven teachers have been left without renewed contracts from AML.”
Another internal communication obtained reveals that some kindergarten and elementary classes are also reportedly affected, raising concerns about students’ access to classroom instruction and quality education across multiple grade levels.

The dossier places renewed scrutiny on the company’s school management, staffing arrangements, compliance, transparency, and its responsibility to ensure that students receive the education promised under the institution’s academic program and Mineral Development Agreement (MDA).

LEAKED COMMUNICATION RAISES CONCERNS

According to a leaked letter, a Representative on the Workers Union, who is a father of five children enrolled in the company’s school system, expressed serious concern that the prolonged absence of teachers in core subjects could undermine students’ academic performance and future educational opportunities.

The communication also questioned how the schools could sustain their reported record of strong national examination results if students were attending classes without instructors for essential subjects for several months now.

The Union’s Representative described the situation as a threat to children’s right to quality education and called on the AML management to return contracted teachers of core subjects to the classrooms. The communication further warned that the matter could be brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education if the concerns remained unresolved.

The reported absence of teachers in several core subjects raises questions about the continuity of instruction and whether affected students are receiving the full curriculum.

PTA ENGAGEMENT, MANAGEMENT RESPONSE UNCLEAR

In pursuit of independent verification, Verity News contacted several individuals associated with the school system, including representatives of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

Pastor Tarley acknowledged the concerns and confirmed the reports but indicated that stakeholders had engaged the school management. According to him, the management reportedly promised to address the situation soon.

Peter Zuagar, AML’s Superintendent of Schools, told Verity News that he was on medical leave in India and declined to comment on the matter, explaining that he was outside the country.

Charlesetta Paters Harris, head of AML’s Education Department, was contacted by telephone and through multiple messages seeking clarification on the reported shortage. She had not responded by press time.

AML PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE ALSO CONTACTED

Verity News also sought an official response from ArcelorMittal Liberia through its Public Relations Office, headed by Winston Daryou.

According to the newspaper’s investigative team, Daryou had previously requested that the concerns be submitted to him by email. Verity News complied with that request and forwarded its questions for the company’s response(s).

However, the newspaper had received no response by press time after making multiple follow-ups via WhatsApp and Email.

The absence of a response does not, by itself, suggest that AML has refused to address the reported teacher shortages. However, without an official explanation, important questions about the allegations, the company’s staffing plans, and the timeline for resolving the reported education gaps remain unanswered.

QUESTIONS ABOUT STAFFING AND ACADEMIC OVERSIGHT

The allegations raise several questions that require clarification from AML’s school administration and corporate management.

These include whether teachers were withdrawn, reassigned, or had their contracts ended; Documents in our possession show that the contracts of the teachers ended in July 2026, and the management has yet to renew them.

Verity News also seeks clarification on the number of vacant teaching positions, the duration of the reported shortages, and the measures being taken to ensure that students do not fall behind academically.

If the reported gaps persist, the Ministry of Education may also need to clarify whether the school system is meeting applicable educational requirements and what oversight measures, if any, may be warranted.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

The concerns have placed the spotlight on a fundamental question: how can students be expected to meet academic standards when essential subjects are without instructors?

For parents, the issue extends beyond staffing arrangements to the quality and continuity of education their children receive.

Verity News will continue investigating the teacher shortages at the AML School System, seeking more documentary evidence and responses from school officials, parents, AML management, and relevant education authorities.

The newspaper will also seek to establish whether the company’s reported commitment to address the concerns has resulted in additional teachers being assigned to affected classrooms.
