Space Week Advances STEM

Young people across Liberia engaged in space science, technology, and STEM education through a series of activities marking World Space Week Liberia 2026, celebrated under the global theme “Rocket Revolution.”

The programme featured a three-day workshop from October 8 to 10 at the Orange Digital Center (ODC) in Monrovia, organized in collaboration with the center, the Ministry of Education, and other partners supporting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

Students from several secondary schools, including Monrovia College & Industrial Training School, Innovation Preparatory International Academy, Destiny International Academy, Maretha International Preparatory High School, and Bishop Marwieh Institute, participated in educational sessions and discussions on space science and opportunities in STEM fields.

The activities also included an astronomy-focused AstroTour for students in Science Plus Liberia’s after-school STEAM programme.

Meanwhile, the SG[Liberia] 2026 National Space Essay Competition, held under the theme “Why Space Science Matters in Liberia,” recognized young people exploring the role of space science in national development.

Daniel Isaac-sie Jr. won first place, followed by Vakesi A. Jabateh in second place and Arthur Marvelous Collins in third place.

The event was nationally coordinated by the Liberian Astronomical Society (LAS), a nonprofit organization working to expand access to astronomy and space science education.

The initiative sought to stimulate scientific curiosity, encourage innovation, and introduce young Liberians to educational and career opportunities in space science and related disciplines.

World Space Week is an annual international celebration highlighting the contributions of space science and technology to humanity.
