Local Government Minister Apologizes to House Over City Dissolution Controversy

Minister of Local Government, Hon. Francis Sakila Nyumalin, has apologized to the 55th House of Representatives over assertions by his deputy, Hon. Fatima Bintu Sirleaf, that major cities across Liberia were dissolved without legislative consent.

Appearing before the House plenary on Tuesday, October 20, Minister Nyumalin clarified that assessments of the affected cities are still ongoing.

He assured lawmakers that upon completion of the assessments, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Legislature for review and further action.

The minister’s clarification suggests that the previous report on the proposed dissolution of the cities is now null and void, pending the completion of the assessment process and legislative review.

Nyumalin and Deputy Minister Sirleaf appeared before lawmakers to explain why plans to dissolve some major cities across the country were announced without the consent of the Legislature.
