Cuttington University Professor Accused of Shortchanging Graduate Students: “We pay a lot in tuition and fees to have very little in return”

Graduate students in the Accounting 601 Class at Cuttington University have expressed serious dissatisfaction with what they termed “very high fees, but very little in return.”

Speaking to Verity News, the students accused Professor G. Thomas M. Duoe, who is also the Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration at Cuttington University, of allegedly abandoning his Accounting 601 class for one month.

“His absences are even more than a month. We were not taught the required syllabus or topics in Accounting 601. No teacher. No lesson. So, what did we learn to be taking a midterm? The individual paper that he told us to write has nothing to do with Accounting 601. But on our ledgers, we will be graded for Accounting 601. There is no Accounting topic of that nature. Is this what we came here to learn in Accounting 601? This is unfair to us. Why deceive us? Where is value for money?” a Graduate student told Verity News.

Verity News obtained a screenshot of the Accounting 601 Midterm that Professor Duoe gave the Graduate Students. Prof. Duoe’s midterm instructions stated, “Greetings, please write your midterm individual papers on the topic: Why am I at Cuttington Graduate School…”

The leaked WhatsApp message also reflected the University of Liberia (UL) and the United Methodist University (UMU). It appears that Prof. Doue is allegedly teaching at UL and UMU and may have given Graduate students there a similar midterm in Accounting, but Verity News has not independently verified these claims.

Another Graduate student told Verity News that they are paying US$100 per credit at Cuttington University.

“Why are they playing fun of us. We pay US$100 just for a credit at this school. Imagine, a lot of us are carrying 12 or 15 credits. That’s US$1,200 or US$1,500. Besides such high tuition, we are paying US$300 as registration fees again. This man is supposed to be teaching us Managerial Accounting, and the midterm exam is supposed to be centered around Managerial Accounting, not this K-2 thing that he is calling a project paper. We pay a lot in tuition and fees to have very little in return. We are tired of keeping quiet about these things. It’s bad.”

When contacted by Verity News for comments, Professor G. Thomas M. Duoe admitted that he instructed the students to write a 20-page paper as their midterm on the topic: “Why am I at Cuttington University Graduate School?”

Prof. Duoe also admitted to his prolonged absence, but claimed that he was sick.

He told Verity, “… Are you a member of the class? I got nothing to do with journalists there. I am the teacher. I am sick and at home. The school said that the midterm is supposed to be an individual project paper. And the midterm is supposed to be from the 19th to the 24th. So, when I signed it, what crime have I committed? All the courses that they are doing, they are not taking exams. They do project papers. This has been happening for the past years. The school said that the graduate school should not give exams, and this has been happening for the past 7 to 8 years. The school said we should not give people exams. They should write papers. So, what do you want me to do?”

When quizzed further by the journalist, “But we are talking about Accounting 601, which should cover topics under Managerial Accounting, but you have told graduate students to only write a 20-page project paper on ‘Why they are at Cuttington University Graduate School’ as their midterm, which is totally unrelated to Accounting 601. What can you say about this?’

The professor replied, “Yes, that is Accounting.”

Verity News also reviewed the textbook that should be taught for Accounting 601 at Cuttington University; the topics include: Basic Cost Management Concepts, Product Costing and Cost Accumulation, Activity-based Costing and Management, Cost-Volume Profit Analysis, among others.
