The National Port Authority (NPA) of Liberia has outlined an ambitious plan to deepen the waterways at the Freeport of Monrovia, a strategic initiative aimed at accommodating larger commercial vessels and improving maritime accessibility.
The Managing Director of the NPA, Hon. Sekou A. M. Dukuly, disclosed the proposed dredging initiative on Thursday, October 29, 2026, when he appeared before the Liberian Senate.
According to the NPA, the proposed project forms part of its broader strategy to modernize Liberia’s port infrastructure, address navigational limitations, and make the country’s principal commercial seaport more attractive to international shipping companies and investors.
Dukuly explained that deepening the port’s waterways would improve access for larger vessels with deeper drafts, which may currently encounter operational restrictions because of existing water-depth limitations.
If successfully implemented, the project is expected to increase the port’s capacity to accommodate larger cargo volumes, improve vessel turnaround times, reduce shipping constraints, and enhance cargo-handling efficiency.
The proposed development could also strengthen Liberia’s import and export activities while improving the country’s competitiveness against other maritime and logistics hubs in West Africa.
As Liberia’s principal commercial seaport, the Freeport of Monrovia plays a central role in international trade, government revenue generation, commercial activities, and the movement of goods into and out of the country.
The NPA believes that improving the port’s navigational infrastructure could encourage greater private-sector participation, attract international maritime investment, and create additional employment opportunities.
However, the Authority acknowledged that implementing the proposed dredging project would require comprehensive hydrographic surveys, engineering assessments, environmental safeguards, financial planning, and coordination with relevant government institutions and maritime stakeholders.
The NPA also emphasized the need to ensure that any dredging activities comply with applicable maritime safety standards and environmental protection requirements.
The proposed initiative comes as Liberia seeks to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and expand its participation in regional and international trade.
Although the Authority has outlined the project’s expected benefits, further details regarding its financing, implementation timeline, estimated cost, and commencement date were not provided in the October 30 press release.
The success of the initiative will ultimately depend on the government’s ability to mobilize the necessary resources, complete the required technical and environmental assessments, and translate the proposed plan into actual infrastructure improvements at the Freeport of Monrovia.
