Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono has pledged LD$400,000 and a brand-new rice mill to the Concerned Women of Buu-Yao in District #5, as part of efforts to strengthen local agricultural production and support women farmers
The commitment was announced Monday, November 2, 2026, during the launch of the harvest of a large upland rice farm cultivated by the women’s group in Bealay Town, Nimba County.
Addressing the gathering, Superintendent Gono assured the women that the L$400,000 financial assistance, together with the rice mill, would be delivered early next week.
She said the support is intended to strengthen the group’s agricultural activities, improve rice production, and increase the capacity of women farmers to contribute to local food production.
Gono also disclosed plans to engage the Ministry of Agriculture through the office of the County Agriculture Coordinator to explore additional assistance for the group, particularly in expanding its farming operations.
Meanwhile, the county superintendent acknowledged District #5 Representative Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue for his contributions to the women’s group, disclosing that the lawmaker has provided assistance amounting to more than L$1.3 million.
The combined support pledged by Superintendent Gono and Representative Kwagrue is expected to strengthen the group’s agricultural operations, particularly in rice cultivation and processing.
The proposed rice mill is expected to help address some of the difficulties associated with processing locally harvested rice, while the financial assistance could provide additional resources for the women to sustain and expand their farming activities.
The commitment comes amid growing calls for increased investment in local agriculture, particularly support for rural women farmers, as Liberia continues to pursue efforts to strengthen domestic food production and reduce dependence on imported food.
The delivery of the pledged funds and rice mill will now be important in determining how quickly the women’s group can translate the commitments into improved agricultural production and economic opportunities for its members.
