The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), in collaboration with the Government of Liberia and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), celebrated Human Rights Day 2024 on December 10 under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” The event at Monrovia City Hall also marked the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The celebration gathered government officials, human rights advocates, civil society organizations, and international partners to reflect on Liberia’s human rights record, particularly its commitment to combating gender-based violence.
In her remarks, a representative of the European Union highlighted the importance of the day’s themes, stating:
“These themes emphasize the fundamental connection between human rights and Liberia’s sustainable future. They also remind us that the steps we take today will shape the rights and opportunities for future generations.”
The 16 Days of Activism campaign, which began on November 25 to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, featured nationwide initiatives aimed at raising awareness about GBV and fostering discussions on its prevention.
Speakers at the event addressed the persistent challenges in protecting human rights in Liberia, with a focus on the prevalence of GBV. They emphasized the urgent need for stronger law enforcement, enhanced community engagement, and improved survivor support systems to combat the issue.
The OHCHR commended Liberia for its ongoing efforts in promoting human rights while urging the government to tackle systemic inequalities more effectively. An OHCHR representative remarked:
“Rights are not just ideals but the building blocks of equitable societies. We must protect these rights to secure a brighter future for all Liberians.”
The event concluded with a strong call to action for stakeholders to prioritize human rights and gender equality in national policies and programs. Organizers emphasized the importance of translating the day’s themes into actionable steps to ensure a just and equitable Liberia.
Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. This global observance reaffirms commitments to equality, justice, and human dignity and serves as a reminder of the work needed to uphold these principles in Liberia and worldwide.
