The National Port Authority (NPA) has strongly dismissed claims of a rift between its Managing Director, Sekou A.M. Dukuly, and Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, which were reported in the New Dawn newspaper on January 7.
The NPA labelled the report as sensational, fabricated, and misleading, stating that the claims were designed to damage the professional relationship between Dukuly and Karnga-Lawrence.
In a statement, the NPA clarified that Dukuly maintains a respectful and professional working relationship with Senate leadership, including Karnga-Lawrence.
The authority emphasized that there have been no confrontations or disagreements between the two officials regarding the Senate’s proposal for port autonomy.
The NPA also addressed the Senate’s proposal, explaining that its Board of Directors strongly opposed granting autonomy to Liberia’s seaports.
The Board voiced concerns that such a move could destabilize the already struggling port sector, potentially cause economic setbacks, and hinder national development.
Despite these reservations, the NPA reiterated its commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders, including the Senate, to find sustainable solutions to strengthen the port sector and support the country’s economic growth.
The NPA concluded by urging the media to report responsibly and avoid spreading misleading headlines.
The authority remains focused on improving port operations and contributing positively to Liberia’s economic progress.
