The office of First Lady Kartumu Boakai has become the center of a controversy following allegations of fraud involving one of its senior officials.
Varfee Holmes, who serves as the Technical Consultant and Media and Communication Officer, is accused of collecting US$4,000 from two Liberians under the pretense of helping them secure scholarships to study in London.
According to the alleged victims, Holmes demanded $2,000 from each applicant, promising that their payments would guarantee success in obtaining the scholarships.
However, after the funds were handed over, the applicants claimed that Holmes ceased all communication and failed to provide any support.
In a phone interview on the Spoon Talk platform on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Holmes acknowledged receiving the money but argued that the payments were meant to cover costs for a partially funded scholarship program.
While initially distancing the First Lady from any involvement in the scheme, Holmes later admitted that she had been informed, though only “on the surface.”
The scandal has triggered anger among Liberians, with many questioning the ethical standards of public officials and the transparency of operations within the First Lady’s office.
Critics argue that such incidents undermine public trust and tarnish efforts to advance education and development in the country.
Amid growing concerns about corruption in Liberia’s public sector, citizens are calling for stronger oversight to prevent similar cases in the future.
For the alleged victims, the ordeal has been particularly disheartening, as it represents not only a financial loss but also a betrayal of trust by those in positions of authority.
