In a significant move to enhance its operational readiness, the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has officially activated its 1st Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and Signal Company. The activation ceremony was held at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia.
The newly established units are expected to strengthen the AFL’s capacity in both reconnaissance and communications, critical components in modern military operations. Officials say the development marks a major milestone in ongoing efforts to build a more capable and professional national military force.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of National Defense, Dr. Augustine Larmin, emphasized the strategic importance of the new units. “The activation of these battalions is a vital step in our journey toward a more professional and responsive military. These capabilities are essential to maintaining peace and security within Liberia,” Dr. Larmin said.
The event was also attended by Chief of Staff of the AFL, Major General Davidson Forleh, along with other high-ranking military officers and defense officials.
According to officials, the activation forms part of a broader government-supported initiative to reform and modernize the AFL. The initiative includes enhancements in military infrastructure, training, and strategic partnerships, aimed at strengthening Liberia’s national defense.
General Forleh praised the efforts of all involved in standing up the new battalions, stating that the AFL remains committed to its mission of defending the country and supporting peacekeeping operations both locally and internationally.
The Signal Company will focus on improving internal communication networks within the force, while the Armored Reconnaissance Battalion will enhance the AFL’s ability to gather and analyze battlefield intelligence – both crucial in addressing emerging security threats.
