House of Representatives Approves NFAA Autonomy, Marking Milestone in Liberia’s Fight Against Hunger

The National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) has officially become an autonomous institution, following the House of Representatives’ concurrence with the Liberian Senate in passing legislation to establish the agency as an independent body.

The Act, originally introduced in the Senate by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon and passed on January 25, 2022, marks a significant shift in how food assistance is delivered across Liberia. With this development, the NFAA will no longer rely on annual executive orders but will operate under a permanent legal framework, allowing for long-term planning, improved coordination, and sustainable responses to food insecurity and emergency needs.

Director General Borkai A. M. Sirleaf hailed the legislative move as a “transformative step” and extended the agency’s gratitude to the House of Representatives for their decisive action. Special commendation was given to Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and Representatives Nehkeh E. Gaye, James M. Kolleh, Michael Thomas, and Anthony F. Williams for their support in pushing the bill forward.

“We are entering a new era of accountability, coordination, and impact in the fight against hunger and malnutrition,” Sirleaf stated, emphasizing the agency’s renewed commitment to working with both national and international partners to reach Liberia’s most vulnerable citizens.

The NFAA also acknowledged the role of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., for his guidance and support in establishing a resilient national food assistance framework.

With the law now in place, the NFAA is poised to expand its operations and implement structured, nationwide food support programs, bringing hope to communities affected by poverty, malnutrition, and natural disasters.

The legislation is being hailed as a critical step toward institutional stability and a more effective approach to food security in Liberia.
