The Association of Liberia Community Radio (ALICOR) has strongly condemned what it describes as a troubling pattern of harassment and intimidation against Smile FM, a community radio station based in Grand Gedeh County. The condemnation follows the recent closure of the station, allegedly ordered by Superintendent Alex Grant.
In a press statement issued on Monday, ALICOR expressed deep concern over what it believes to be a politically motivated attack on independent media. The organization stated that Smile FM has long served as a critical voice for the people of Grand Gedeh, offering alternative perspectives and fostering community engagement.
ALICOR President Hector Mulbah described the Superintendent’s actions as “disappointing and unacceptable,” particularly in light of ongoing efforts by national and diaspora stakeholders, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus, and the Grand Gedean Citizens Association in the Americas to resolve tensions surrounding the station.
The organization also highlighted the contradiction between the Superintendent’s actions and President Joseph Boakai’s recent reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to press freedom during the Presidential Media Dinner.
“This arbitrary shutdown is not only a violation of media rights but a dangerous threat to Liberia’s democratic values,” the statement reads. ALICOR has called for the immediate reopening of Smile FM and demanded assurances for the safety and security of the station’s staff.
Furthermore, ALICOR is urging journalists across the country to unite in solidarity with Smile FM and stand firm in defense of press freedom.
