Boakai Affirms Commitment to Democracy and Good Governance

Abuja, Nigeria– Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to democracy and good governance during the 65th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The summit, held on Sunday, July 7, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, brought together leaders from across the West African region to discuss pressing issues and chart a course for the future.

President Boakai began his address by expressing heartfelt gratitude for the warm reception and support extended to him and his delegation.

He thanked his fellow leaders for their congratulations and unwavering support following his inauguration as the 26th President of Liberia.

The Liberian emphasized that the peaceful transition of power in Liberia serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the country’s commitment to democratic principles.

In his speech, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to collaborating with ECOWAS member states and development partners to advance Liberia’s agenda for sustainable development.

He outlined key areas of focus, including agriculture, infrastructure development, the rule of law, education, sanitation, and tourism, aligning with the broader ECOWAS Vision 2050.

His vision aims to improve the living standards of people across the region through sustainable and inclusive growth.

President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s support for ECOWAS’ ongoing efforts to engage with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, encouraging these countries to reconsider their decisions to withdraw from the organization.

He underscored Liberia’s readiness to actively participate in mediation efforts, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in maintaining peace and prosperity in the region.

In a significant announcement, President Boakai revealed Liberia’s intention to campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-27 period.

Liberia’s 26th President sought the support of ECOWAS member states, highlighting Liberia’s commitment to representing the interests of post-war developing states and addressing critical global issues such as migration, terrorism, conflict, and climate change.

“I am optimistic about the highly productive outcomes of this 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,” President Boakai stated. “Together, we can achieve great strides in promoting democracy, good governance, and sustainable development across our region.”

During the summit, the Liberian President joined other ECOWAS leaders in unanimously endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria for a second term as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.

In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu appointed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his Special Envoy to mediate and reverse the decisions of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to withdraw from ECOWAS.

 The move underscores the collective commitment of ECOWAS leaders to maintaining unity and stability in the region.

President Boakai’s address also highlighted Liberia’s progress in various sectors and its commitment to further strengthening its democratic institutions. He reiterated the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity in addressing common challenges and achieving shared goals.

“We must continue to work together, leveraging our collective strengths and resources, to build a brighter future for our people,” President Boakai asserted. “Liberia stands ready to contribute to the advancement of our region, and I am confident that, with our combined efforts, we can overcome any obstacles and achieve lasting peace and prosperity.”

As the summit concluded, participants expressed optimism about the future of ECOWAS and the region. The date and venue of the 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government will be announced in due course.

President Boakai’s participation in the 65th ECOWAS Summit marks a significant step in Liberia’s continued engagement with regional and international partners. His reaffirmation of Liberia’s commitment to democracy, good governance, and sustainable development reflects the nation’s resolve to play a constructive role in promoting peace and progress in West Africa and beyond.
