President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has submitted two major bills to the National Legislature seeking the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court and a National Anti-Corruption Court in Liberia.
The proposed legislations were formally transmitted to House Speaker Richard Koon and Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence for deliberation and possible enactment.
According to the Executive Mansion, the first bill seeks to establish a War and Economic Crimes Court to prosecute allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, gross human rights violations, and economic crimes committed during Liberia’s civil conflicts. The proposal is in line with recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and commitments under the Accra Peace Agreement.
The second bill proposes the creation of a specialized National Anti-Corruption Court aimed at improving the prosecution of corruption-related offenses and strengthening accountability within public institutions.
President Boakai said the bills are intended to strengthen the rule of law, address historical injustices, promote transparency, and restore public confidence in governance.
“These reforms represent a decisive step toward justice, reconciliation, and sustainable national renewal,” the President stated.
The Liberian leader also urged lawmakers to give the proposed legislations urgent consideration in the national interest.
