Zota Wolapolu, Bong County–Authorities in Bong County have launched a decisive crackdown on illegal mining activities involving Burkinabe nationals in the Zota District, following the recent discovery of several unauthorized mining operations.
The initiative was announced on Monday, May 5, by County Superintendent Loleyah Hawa Norris, who confirmed the existence of multiple illicit mining sites uncovered during an intervention to resolve disputes between local miners and the Chinese-owned H&K Mining Company. The findings have prompted swift law enforcement action.
Despite claims that the foreign miners entered Liberia with valid documentation, Superintendent Norris clarified that their mining operations were unauthorized and lacked approval from local authorities. This discrepancy has sparked concerns over regulatory oversight, particularly involving foreign nationals in the country’s mining sector.
In a joint operation, authorities apprehended two individuals identified as Harouna Ouedalaogo, 44, and Barchezu Sone, 42. Both are believed to be key figures in the illegal activities.
Alongside the arrests, law enforcement confiscated hazardous substances, most notably mercury, as well as documents potentially linking others to the operations.
Bong County Attorney Jonathan Flomo joined Superintendent Norris in expressing serious concern over the environmental and public health risks posed by these illegal practices.
The use of toxic chemicals in mining threatens local water sources and the health of nearby communities.
Local officials have called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other national institutions to step in urgently.
They are seeking stronger enforcement measures to curb illegal mining and prevent long-term damage to both the environment and public health.
This crackdown marks a significant step in protecting the region’s natural resources and ensuring community safety.
County leaders stress the need for continued collaboration with national agencies to halt illegal operations and safeguard Liberia’s mining sector from further exploitation.
