Buchanan, Grand Bassa County: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., may have departed Grand Bassa County following Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebrations, but one of the most enduring reminders of his visit continues to shine across Buchanan City.
Just days after the President officially energized the Buchanan Electricity Distribution Network, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, residents are celebrating what many describe as a life-changing milestone—the return of reliable electricity to parts of the City for the first time in more than three decades.
Homes, businesses, streets, schools, religious and public institutions that had long relied on generators and other costly alternatives are now benefiting from a stable power supply, bringing renewed hope and expanding opportunities for economic activities.
For many residents, the lighting of Buchanan was more than the commissioning of an infrastructure project; it represented the fulfillment of a promise and a tangible improvement in their daily lives.

The restoration of electricity in that historic and economically important City forms part of the Boakai Administration’s broader efforts under Pillar Two of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), which prioritizes modern infrastructure, expanded access to essential public services, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Boakai described electricity as a catalyst for development, emphasizing that access to reliable power is essential to improving healthcare, education, commerce, and the overall quality of life of Liberians.
The project has generated widespread excitement throughout Grand Bassa County, with many residents expressing appreciation for an achievement they say had remained out of reach for decades. Community members have hailed the restoration of power as a turning point for Buchanan’s future, anticipating increased investment, expanded business opportunities, and improved public services.
Although the Independence Day celebrations have concluded and the President has since continued his national engagements elsewhere in the country, the lights that now illuminate Buchanan stand out as a lasting symbol of progress and of this Government’s determination to deliver meaningful development that citizens can see and experience every day.
