While rumors persist that the Opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters is at high risk of eviction, the party has dispelled these claims, stating that it has a good relationship with the owners of the facility in which it operates.
There have been growing concerns among partisans of the CDC and critics, who claim that the party is on the verge of eviction.
However, these claims have been met with denial, as the party has clarified the situation through its Secretary General, Jefferson Koijee.
Opposition CDC SG Koijee clarified that the party is in good standing at its national home in Congo Town.
The political statesman, who recently spoke on a local radio station in Monrovia, noted that the CDC continues to maintain a smooth relationship with the family members who own the property.
According to him, since the party’s inception under its founding leader, former President George Weah, they have made efforts to avoid any form of embarrassment towards the party.
The CDC is on record for having been evicted in 2009 after a dispute among members of the Bernald family, who own the property.
The party temporarily relocated to former President Weah’s home on 9th Street.
However, in 2010, the CDC returned to its original headquarters after the family resolved their internal conflict.
Koijee revealed that after the party’s victory in 2017, the CDC attempted to purchase the property but was unable to do so due to family disputes.
He also accused the ruling Unity Party of politicizing the issue, which is currently before the court. Koijee further noted that while the CDC could have used its political power to claim the property while in government, the party chose to respect the law.
“We are respecters of the law, but we can say to you in a very clear tone that those who think they can weaponize the court because they have a political objective can rest assured that the CDC will meet them in the middle,” Koijee said.
He added, “We have been good tenants, consistently paying our rent. Even now, the case is before the Supreme Court, but the party has maintained a positive relationship with the family. We can confidently say that the Unity Party has revived its political agenda to displace us, but there’s no reason to panic. The CDC and its leadership are firmly in place, and we have no intention of leaving our current headquarters.”
