Logan Town, Monrovia—Tension gripped Logan Town late Saturday evening after unidentified men attempted to set up a roadblock by burning tires along one of the community’s main thoroughfares.
The incident occurred shortly after the high-profile arrest and detention of Former House Speaker Fonati Koffa, along with Representatives Abu Kamara (District #15), and others.
Eyewitnesses told Verity News that the attempted disruption appeared to be a protest against the controversial arrests, which have sparked outrage among some political supporters.
The men, whose identities remain unknown, reportedly rolled tires into the street and ignited them in an effort to obstruct traffic and draw attention.
However, their attempt was swiftly resisted by passersby and a group of local residents who intervened before the situation could escalate.
“They tried to block the road with burning tires, but some of us stood up and stopped them,” said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons. “We don’t want chaos in our community, we want peace.”
The Liberia National Police have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident, but officers were reportedly seen arriving on the scene minutes after the disturbance.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and normal traffic resumed shortly thereafter.
Tensions have been simmering nationwide since the arrest of Koffa and his colleagues on Friday.
The lawmakers face multiple charges that government sources have described as “serious violations of public trust.”
Opposition figures have condemned the arrests, labeling them politically motivated and an attack on democratic institutions.
Meanwhile, residents in Logan Town expressed both concern and frustration over the incident.
Authorities have not announced any arrests related to the Logan Town disturbance, but investigations are reportedly ongoing.
