The Monrovia City Court has remanded a 41-year-old Chinese national and three local security guards for their alleged involvement in the brutal attack and attempted murder of a Liberian man.
The suspects, identified as Shio, Emmanuel Nyumah, Andrew Barmoh, and Sunday Sumo, were formally charged following a police investigation into the January 13, 2025, incident in Oldest Congo Town.
According to the police charge sheet, the victim, 31-year-old Momo David, was apprehended near the residence of Shio, where he was accused of attempting to steal a solar panel.
The security guards reportedly restrained David before subjecting him to severe physical abuse. Investigators say Shio took the assault further by pouring hot oil on David’s chest and neck, leaving him with critical burns. He also allegedly ordered his dog to attack the victim, resulting in deep bite wounds on his legs.
Eyewitnesses recounted that after the attack, the suspects transported David to Zone-Three Police Station, but officers there recommended he be taken to a hospital. Instead of following this advice, the security guards abandoned him on the roadside, where he remained until his family discovered him in a deteriorating condition. He was later rushed to ELWA Hospital for emergency treatment.
Following public outcry, local leaders and residents in Congo Town intervened, demanding accountability for the attack. Initially, Shio denied involvement but offered financial assistance for David’s medical expenses. His actions, however, did little to quell the anger of community members, who continue to call for swift justice.
Meanwhile, the case has drawn significant attention, with authorities vowing to ensure a fair trial. The suspects remain in custody as legal proceedings move forward, while the victim continues to recover from his injuries. With mounting evidence, prosecutors are determined to seek justice for David, as pressure from the community and human rights advocates grows.
