Monrovia, Liberia–The embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa has issued a public statement responding to widespread speculation and commentary on social media concerning his role amid ongoing tensions within the Legislature.
The Speaker, who has come under increasing scrutiny following a recent Supreme Court ruling, acknowledged the public’s concerns but emphasized his respect for the rule of law and the authority of the judiciary.
“I have become aware of statements circulating on social and other media platforms that make insinuations regarding my position as Speaker,” Koffa said in a statement released Tuesday. “While I am deeply touched by the outpouring of concern… I wish to address these matters with clarity and transparency.”
Koffa reaffirmed that the rule of law must guide all political processes, noting that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling has brought legal clarity to the legislative dispute.
He pledged to honor the Court’s decision and proceed in a manner that upholds the integrity of the office he currently occupies.
“The Supreme Court’s recent ruling has definitively resolved this matter, and I fully respect and uphold its decision,” he stated.
He further revealed that he is now in active consultations with national stakeholders and fellow lawmakers to determine a suitable course for his transition from the Speakership.
While not announcing a definitive resignation, the Speaker hinted that changes may be forthcoming.
“I am actively engaging in consultations… regarding my transition from the position and to determine the appropriate path forward,” he said, promising to keep the public updated on any developments.
Koffa also called for restraint, urging citizens to avoid spreading unfounded rumors that could deepen national division.
“I urge all citizens to refrain from amplifying unsubstantiated claims that risk fostering unnecessary confusion or division,” the statement concluded.
The Speaker’s remarks come at a time of heightened political uncertainty, with growing calls for leadership reform within the House.
His statement is expected to ease tensions as the Legislature navigates its next steps.
