Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), has described the construction of a modern National Clinical Diagnostic and Treatment Laboratory as a transformative development for Liberia’s healthcare sector. During the groundbreaking ceremony near the EBK Military Barracks in Margibi County on Friday, December 20, 2024, Dr. Nyan emphasized the facility’s potential to revolutionize medical diagnostics and research in the country.
“This facility will expand our network of laboratories, not just for diagnostics but also for research into therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostic tests,” Dr. Nyan stated. He commended the Liberian Government and development partners, particularly the People’s Republic of China, for their vision and commitment to improving public health.
Funded by the Chinese Government and implemented through China Aid Liberia, the laboratory is designed to meet international standards, offering world-class diagnostic and treatment services. Dr. Nyan revealed that NPHIL is already laying the groundwork for exploring pharmaceutical research and vaccine development to address Liberia’s pressing health challenges.
President Joseph Boakai officially launched the project and praised Dr. Nyan’s contributions to science and public health, calling him a “renowned scientist who has brought immense pride to Liberia.” The President highlighted the lab’s significance in enhancing healthcare delivery and addressing longstanding gaps in medical services.
The facility will serve military personnel and civilians, ensuring equitable access to cutting-edge healthcare. Beyond its immediate medical functions, it will create jobs, provide training opportunities for Liberian professionals, and strengthen the nation’s capacity to respond to health emergencies.
Once completed, the laboratory is expected to address critical healthcare needs, improve diagnostic accuracy, and position Liberia as a regional medical research and development leader. This collaborative effort underscores the shared commitment between Liberia and China to advancing public health and fostering sustainable development.
