EU Pours Millions into Liberia Through Global Gateway Investments

The second Global Gateway Forum officially opened today in Brussels, hosted by the European Commission.

The high-level gathering brings together international partners, including Liberia, to explore how to accelerate sustainable investments across key sectors such as energy, digital infrastructure, transport, health, and education.

At the heart of discussions is the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, a bold commitment to narrowing the global investment gap by fostering smart, green, and secure infrastructure worldwide.

Under this initiative, the EU has pledged €300 billion globally, with a significant share earmarked for Africa under the Africa–Europe Investment Package. Liberia stands out as one of the key beneficiaries of this growing partnership.

So far, the EU has directed tens of millions of Euros into Liberia, focusing on long-term development, access to energy, and job creation. One of the flagship interventions is a €42 million rural electrification project, currently underway in Buchanan, Greenville, and Barclayville, which is expected to reach over 16,000 households with reliable electricity.

In addition, through the Liberia Energy Efficiency and Access Project, nearly 40,000 new electricity connections are being rolled out, transforming lives and powering local economies.

Youth empowerment and skills training are also high on the EU’s agenda. The Youth Rising I and II initiatives, backed with a combined €60 million, are building Liberia’s technical and vocational training capacity between 2018 and 2029.

The EU has further committed €25 million to Private Sector Development in Liberia, aimed at fostering entrepreneurship, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.

“These investments are not just numbers,” said an EU spokesperson at the Forum. “They represent real change, in livelihoods, in access to basic services, and in opportunities for future generations in Liberia.”

The Global Gateway strategy reaffirms the EU’s commitment to building mutually beneficial partnerships, with a strong emphasis on local impact and sustainable development.

As Liberia continues to face economic and infrastructure challenges, the growing financial support from the European Union marks a strategic boost toward long-term progress and stability.
