ECOWAS Applauds Liberia’s Progress Toward Establishing War and Economic Crimes Court

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed strong support and commendation for the efforts of the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Courts in Liberia (OWECC-L), citing significant progress in advancing transitional justice and promoting lasting peace in the country.

During a high-level visit to OWECC-L in Monrovia, ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, Her Excellency Madam Josephine Nkrumah, praised the leadership of Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, Executive Director of OWECC-L, for his commitment to the establishment of both the War and Economic Crimes Court and a dedicated Anti-Corruption Court.

Ambassador Nkrumah described these developments as a major milestone in Liberia’s journey toward accountability, national reconciliation, and institutional reform. She emphasized that the creation of these courts is not only vital to Liberia’s national interests but also holds significant importance for peace and stability across the West African region.

Reaffirming ECOWAS’s commitment, Ambassador Nkrumah pledged continued technical support and regional cooperation to bolster Liberia’s transitional justice efforts. She also encouraged OWECC-L to leverage ECOWAS Radio to enhance public outreach and civic engagement, aligning with the Office’s goal of inclusive participation in the justice process.

As part of her visit, the Ambassador also met with interns working at OWECC-L, urging them to fully embrace the opportunity to be part of Liberia’s historic push for justice and reform. She noted that their experience at the institution would be instrumental in shaping their roles in future transitional justice initiatives.

In response, Dr. Barbu expressed his gratitude for the regional body’s endorsement, stating that ECOWAS’s recognition strengthens the resolve of his office to deliver justice and rebuild public confidence in Liberia’s governance structures.

“We are honored to have ECOWAS as a strategic partner in this journey,” said Dr. Barbu. “The collaboration is a major step toward establishing long-awaited justice mechanisms in our country. These courts will serve as cornerstones for truth, accountability, and national unity.”

The establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court, alongside the Anti-Corruption Court, remains a critical aspect of Liberia’s transitional justice roadmap.

As support grows from both regional and international partners, Liberians are hopeful that justice, reconciliation, and sustainable peace are within reach.
