MONROVIA, Liberia, October 19, 2026: The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) has buried a crocodile that was killed by residents of the Peace Community in the Caldwell area, Montserrado County.
According to reports, the animal was spotted moving through the community, which prompted fear among residents and led to its killing.
The FDA used the occasion to remind the public that crocodiles are protected wildlife under Liberian law, and urged residents to report sightings of protected animal species to authorities rather than take matters into their own hands.
Under the October 5, 2016 National Wildlife Conservation and Protected Area Management Law of Liberia, it is completely prohibited and punishable by law to kill, eat, sell, buy, keep as a pet, or transport these protected animals: Chimpanzee, Elephant, Leopard, Crocodile, Python, Monkey, Turtle, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Golden Cat, Mongoose, Zebra Duiker, Pangolin, Jentink’s Duiker, Buffalo, Bongo, Ogilby’s Duiker, Parrot, Water Chevrotain, and Yellow-backed Duiker.
