MONROVIA, Liberia — 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee has taken an apparent swipe at lawmakers amid what she described as repeated changes in the position of Speaker, suggesting that some legislators may be pursuing personal interests.
In a brief statement posted on social media on Saturday, Gbowee wrote: “My people, you all will be changing Speaker until your get Microphone. Then they say I must put handle to their names…Hmmm. Happy Saturday.”
Although she did not identify any lawmaker or provide further details, her remarks appear to question the motivations behind efforts to change legislative leadership, particularly when such moves may be linked to personal recognition or influence.
Gbowee, an internationally recognized peace advocate, has often been associated with public discussions on leadership, accountability, and governance.
Her comments could generate debate among Liberians about the conduct of elected officials and the priorities of the Legislature.
However, she did not explicitly name the lawmakers she was referring to or explain what prompted the statement.
