Ghana to Buy World Cup Tickets for Diaspora Fans

ACCRA, Ghana — The Ghanaian government has announced plans to purchase tickets for Ghanaians living abroad to support the national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, rather than funding large groups of supporters to travel from Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama said the initiative is intended to boost fan presence and morale for the Black Stars, particularly in host countries such as the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where sizeable Ghanaian communities reside.

According to the president, sponsoring a single supporter throughout the tournament could cost nearly US$11,000, making large-scale travel sponsorships financially unsustainable under current economic conditions.

Government officials said the ticket-purchase program forms part of broader efforts to mobilize support for the Black Stars as they prepare to compete on football’s biggest stage.
