“Illegal Mining”, Mines Inspector General Coker Pledges Crackdown

Inspector-General of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Agatius B. Coker, has vowed to intensify efforts against illegal mining activities across Liberia, asserting his commitment to enforcing the nation’s Minerals and Mining Law without compromise.

Addressing a press conference in Monrovia over the weekend, Coker reaffirmed the Ministry’s responsibility to regulate the mining sector, describing it as a cornerstone for generating national revenue and advancing Liberia’s development. He condemned illegal mining operations, stating that such activities undermine the country’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Coker’s remarks come in the wake of recent inspections conducted across Liberia’s six mining districts. During these operations, unlicensed individuals were found using unauthorized mining equipment, which was subsequently confiscated. These illicit activities were particularly prominent in Montserrado County, including areas such as Youth Camp and Number-Seven District.

The Inspector-General commended Minister of Mines and Energy Wilmot Paye for his leadership, crediting the Ministry’s administrative and technical support for strengthening the Inspectorate Division. Coker expressed confidence in the Ministry’s capacity to oversee and enforce mining regulations effectively, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing illegal practices.

Minister Paye has also underscored the Ministry’s commitment to tackling illegal mining. He promised to equip inspectors with essential tools and resources, such as motorbikes and county offices, to enhance their field operations. According to Paye, these initiatives are slated for inclusion in the upcoming 2025 fiscal budget.

Coker, alongside Assistant Inspector-General Adolphus Gleekai, leads a dedicated team of trained mineral inspectors to ensure compliance with Liberia’s mining laws. The Inspector-General reiterated his determination to uphold the law and safeguard the country’s natural resources from exploitation by unlicensed miners.
