LACC Takes Regional Role as West African Anti-Corruption Training Ends in Nigeria

The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has emerged as a regional partner in the fight against corruption and financial crimes, following the conclusion of a high-level, week-long training in Niger State, Nigeria. The regional event, which ended on Saturday, April 12, 2025, brought together anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies from across West Africa under the auspices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), and the ECOWAS Commission.

Held at the Zuma Rock Resort, the training aimed at strengthening intelligence sharing and inter-agency cooperation to tackle increasingly complex and transnational financial crimes. Liberia was represented by the LACC’s Chief Investigator, Mr. Abraham B. Sheriff, who played an active role in the discussions and capacity-building sessions throughout the five-day event.

A key highlight of the training was the establishment of a regional database for information and intelligence sharing among member institutions, an initiative Liberia is set to Co-Chair. This strategic position places the LACC at the center of regional anti-corruption efforts, affirming its growing influence and commitment to collaborative governance.

During his engagements, Mr. Sheriff stressed the urgent need for enhanced technical assistance and continuous capacity development to empower anti-graft institutions across the region. His remarks echoed broader concerns about the rapid evolution of financial crimes and the limitations many national agencies face in combating them independently.

The ECOWAS Commission underscored the importance of unified regional action to address these mounting threats. Officials emphasized that only through strengthened partnerships and harmonized strategies can West African countries effectively stem the tide of corruption and economic sabotage.

Participants extended gratitude to the organizing bodies, ECOWAS, NACIWA, and the EFCC, for what they described as a timely and impactful training initiative. With Liberia taking on a leadership role in the newly launched intelligence-sharing framework, expectations are high for more coordinated and effective responses to corruption across the subregion.
