With just nine days remaining before the highly anticipated Nimba County Senatorial By-election, security agencies have begun full deployment across the county to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process on April 22.
Commissioner Ernestine Morgan Awar of the National Elections Commission (NEC), who has oversight on election security, confirmed the deployment during the ongoing Media and Security Forum held in Ganta City on Saturday, April 12. She emphasized that effective collaboration among institutions plays a vital role in strengthening Liberia’s democracy and reinforcing public trust in the electoral process.
Commissioner Awar expressed confidence in the preparedness and timely response of the Liberia National Police and other security agencies tasked with maintaining order during the election period. She praised the level of coordination seen so far and encouraged continued teamwork between election officials, security forces, and civil society actors.
In support of these efforts, Communication Consultant James Kpargoi of the UNDP Liberia–LESP program has been providing essential training to security officers on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for security and media engagement during elections. The training aims to ensure that law enforcement officers maintain professionalism, neutrality, and respect for press freedom throughout the election period.
The security deployment and preparatory efforts are being backed by Liberia’s international partners, including the European Union, UNDP, Internews, the Embassy of Sweden, UN Women, and the Embassy of Ireland. Their support reflects a broader commitment to democratic stability and electoral integrity in Liberia.
As attention turns to Nimba County, the NEC continues to urge citizens to remain peaceful and actively participate in the democratic process. The Commission has encouraged the public to stay informed through its official website and social media platforms.
