Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has strongly condemned the recent fire at the Capitol Building, home to the National Legislature, calling the incident a serious attack on democracy.
In a statement, the LCC urged the Ministry of Justice, Liberia National Police, and Liberia National Fire Service to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation. “If arson is confirmed, those responsible must be held accountable,” the Council stated.
The LCC also called on all Liberians to denounce acts that undermine public institutions built with taxpayer contributions and international support. “Liberia’s progress depends on unity, recovery, and reconciliation, free of hate, deceit, and self-interest,” the Council emphasized.
The Council expressed disappointment over the failure of opposing factions to honor the Supreme Court’s rulings. Despite facilitating dialogue between the Majority Bloc and Pro-Koffa Bloc, including a meeting at Providence Baptist Church where both sides committed to upholding the rule of law, tensions remain unresolved.
The LCC has formally requested clarification from the Supreme Court regarding its recent ruling, citing ambiguity that has complicated its ability to mediate effectively. The Council stressed that adherence to the rule of law is essential to preserving peace and stability in the nation.
The LCC urged Liberians to remain calm and peaceful, allowing the legal process to take its course. It underscored the importance of protecting Liberia’s fragile democracy and maintaining trust in public institutions.
