Monrovia – In a move to ensure public safety, the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Motorcycles and Tricycles Union have reached an agreement to implement the “No Go Zone” policy starting May 15, 2024, aimed at curbing accidents and crimes involving motorcycle riders
An agreement solidified through a memorandum of understanding, signifies a joint effort to restrict motorcycle and tricycle movements in designated areas, addressing concerns over safety and traffic management.
Police Inspector General Col. Gregory Coleman emphasized the necessity of the measure to reduce accidents, crimes, and fatalities associated with commercial motorcycle operations, particularly instances of theft and armed robbery facilitated by motorcycles.
In a move for a collaborative approach, highlighting a cooperative strategy, Col. Coleman stressed the extensive coordination between the LNP and the Federation of Motorcycle and Tricycle Union to ensure a harmonious and sustainable solution.
This emphasizes the importance of garnering the involvement and support of cyclists.
LNP Deputy Inspector for Operation, Nelson Freeman, disclosed the specifics of the agreement, outlining restricted areas from ELWA Boulevard junction to Central Monrovia and from Central Monrovia to Freeport on Bushrod Island, with permitted corridors including the Roberts International Airport and Japan freeway.
Freeman detailed the enforcement protocol, indicating fines not exceeding $2500 Liberian Dollars for motorcycle violators and $3,500 Liberian Dollars for tricycle violators, with revenues directed to the government to ensure enforcement measures.
According to the agreement, private and business motorcyclists are exempted from the restrictions, a decision aimed at balancing public safety with economic considerations.
Meanwhile, President of the Tricycles and Motorcyclists Union, John Kenyor, cautioned against politicizing the enforcement, underscoring the willingness of cyclists to comply with safety regulations for the collective benefit of the nation.
Through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and stakeholders in the motorcycle and tricycle community, the implementation of the “No Go Zone” policy marks a significant step towards enhancing public safety and mitigating the risks associated with motorcycle operations in Liberia.
