MONROVIA, Liberia — The Government of Liberia plans to procure a modern ferry to transport passengers, vehicles and heavy cargo along the country’s coastline, with the proposed service also expected to link Liberia with neighboring coastal countries.
Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr. announced the plan, saying the ferry would provide another means of moving people and goods, particularly to coastal communities where road transportation is difficult.
The proposed vessel would carry shipping containers, earth-moving equipment, trucks, buses, SUVs and other vehicles, as well as passengers.
The government says the service would improve coastal transportation, support trade and make it easier to move goods between communities.
Where applicable, the ferry would also provide transportation links with neighboring coastal countries, creating opportunities for regional commerce.
According to Lighe, the government intends to operate the service through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with LiMA providing oversight and a private-sector partner bringing investment and operational expertise.
The proposed partnership would set out the responsibilities of both parties for operating and maintaining the vessel, managing revenue, ensuring safety and delivering services.
The ferry is expected to provide an alternative to road transportation, especially for coastal communities where poor roads or limited access make travel and cargo movement challenging.
Lighe said the project could create jobs, support coastal businesses and contribute to Liberia’s economic development and regional trade.
The vessel would be required to comply with Liberian laws and international maritime safety and environmental standards.
However, the announcement did not provide details on the ferry’s cost, procurement timeline, capacity, routes or expected start of operations.
