Monrovia -Presidential Press Secretary Kula Fofana has announced that President Joseph Boakai has officially received the joint resolution from both the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate, urging the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Courts in Liberia.
President Boakai has expressed his appreciation for the resolution, viewing it as a crucial initial step toward delivering justice to victims of the Liberian civil war. In a unanimous show of support, members of the 55th Legislature recently signed the resolution, underscoring the nation’s commitment to ensuring accountability for war crimes and economic injustices.
Speaking to reporters at the Executive Mansion on Monday, April 22, 2024, Fofana stated that President Boakai is poised to issue an official response and make a decisive decision regarding the resolution in the coming months.
Fofana emphasized that President Boakai’s team is meticulously reviewing the resolution to inform his stance and actions regarding the establishment of the courts. Additionally, Fofana revealed that the Ministry of State and Presidential Affairs is disbursing salaries for approximately 700 workers who were on supplementary payroll for January, February, and March.
She clarified that these workers, whose contracts with the ministry ended on March 31, 2024, are now receiving compensation for their services at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
Fofana underscored that the salary disbursements are a collaborative effort between the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
Regarding the employment status of these workers, Fofana indicated that the Ministry of State has no immediate plans to regularize their employment.
Furthermore, Fofana disclosed that President Boakai has signed three executive orders, including Executive Orders #129, #130, and #131.
Executive Order #129 extends Executive Order #110, aimed at repositioning the National Food Assistance Agency.
Executive Order #130 grants the National Transit Authority exemption from customs duty on fuel and lubricants to enhance its operations amid challenges such as vehicle shortages.
Executive Order #131 also extends to Executive Order #107, which suspends tariffs on solar renewal products, signaling the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy initiatives.
