New York, USA — A group of Liberians has staged a protest at the United Nations Headquarters and in front of the hotel where President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is staying, calling for stronger action against drugs and alleged injustice in Liberia.
The protesters gathered ahead of President Boakai’s scheduled address to the United Nations General Assembly, chanting slogans including “No to drugs,” “Gregory must go,” and “The IG must go.”
“Our children are dying every day. We say no to drugs. We need justice. Let the United Nations hear our cry,” protesters said.
They also raised concerns about alleged police brutality and called for the removal of Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman.
Some protesters accused Coleman of involvement in the drug trade, though those allegations have not been independently established.
The demonstration comes amid heightened public debate in Liberia over the country’s drug crisis and the handling of a major cocaine investigation.
