Many feared to be trapped after a multi-storey building collapsed in Nairobi

A multi-storey building still under construction came crashing down on Friday in Nairobi, Kenya, and many people are feared to be trapped inside.

At roughly 1 p.m., the structure crumbled along a busy commercial street in the Eastleigh district, an area typically packed with thousands of traders and residents.

The crash left behind a large mound of concrete, with over a dozen floors flattened on top of one another and barely any gaps between them.

Witnesses said a thick plume of dust sent people fleeing from nearby shops, while others ran toward the wreckage to lend a hand.

“Eleven shops on the ground floor and in the basement were occupied at the time of the collapse. Seven people have been reported missing. The rescue team has made contact with some of them, and efforts are underway to rescue those trapped in the rubble,” Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said, vowing a thorough investigation.
