MOH Moves to Close Liberia’s Breast Cancer Screening Gap With New Medical Equipment

The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health (MOH), has moved to strengthen the country’s capacity to detect and diagnose breast cancer with the procurement of critical medical equipment aimed at improving access to specialized healthcare services.

The procurement, announced during observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, includes a mammography system, laparoscopic systems, colposcopes, an anesthesia machine, and patient monitoring equipment.

At the center of the procurement is the mammography system, a specialized X-ray imaging technology used to examine breast tissue for early signs of cancer and other abnormalities.

The equipment is expected to enhance Liberia’s ability to conduct breast cancer screening and support earlier diagnosis, an important step in improving treatment outcomes for patients.

For a health system that continues to face challenges in specialized diagnostic services, the addition of the equipment represents a significant investment in strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Ministry of Health said the newly procured equipment forms part of broader efforts to improve diagnostic capacity, strengthen specialized medical services and expand access to timely screening and treatment.

The mammography system is particularly significant as early detection remains a critical component of breast cancer management. Increased access to appropriate screening and diagnostic services can help identify abnormalities before they progress to more advanced stages.

The other equipment will also support a range of medical procedures and patient-care services. Laparoscopic systems are used in minimally invasive surgical procedures, while colposcopes assist healthcare professionals in examining the cervix for abnormalities. The anesthesia and patient-monitoring equipment are expected to strengthen the capacity of health facilities to safely manage patients undergoing medical procedures.

The procurement comes as Liberia joins countries around the world in using Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness about the disease and the importance of early detection.

With the new equipment, the Ministry of Health is seeking to move beyond awareness campaigns toward strengthening the practical diagnostic capacity needed to detect and manage cancer and other serious medical conditions.

The initiative places renewed emphasis on the need for Liberia to invest not only in public awareness but also in the medical infrastructure, equipment and specialized services required to ensure that patients can access timely diagnosis and care.
