Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Elected First Woman President of Namibia

Windhoek – Namibia has made history by electing its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, a veteran politician and trailblazer for women in leadership. Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, secured victory with 57% of the vote in the November 2024 general election, according to official results.

Set to be inaugurated on March 21, 2025, Nandi-Ndaitwah will become Namibia’s fifth president and the first woman to hold the position since the country gained independence in 1990. Her election marks a groundbreaking milestone in Namibia’s democratic journey.

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political career spans decades. Born on October 29, 1952, in Onamutai, Namibia, she has been a steadfast advocate for social justice and gender equality. Her rise through the ranks of the SWAPO party has been marked by a series of firsts, including becoming the party’s first female vice president in 2017 and its first female presidential candidate in 2024.

She has held key government positions, including Deputy Prime Minister (2015-2024), Minister of International Relations and Cooperation (2012-2015), and Minister of Environment and Tourism (2010-2012). Nandi-Ndaitwah also served as a member of the National Assembly since 1990 and has been a leading figure in SWAPO’s central committee and politburo.

Her diplomatic and administrative skills are bolstered by an impressive academic background, including a master’s degree in diplomatic studies from Keele University in the United Kingdom.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory comes at a pivotal time for Namibia. Her leadership promises to address pressing national issues, including economic development, gender equality, and regional cooperation. Her campaign emphasized inclusivity, sustainable development, and a renewed focus on uplifting marginalized communities.
Her electoral success follows a tragic year for Namibia’s political scene. Following the death of President Hage Geingob in early 2024, Nandi-Ndaitwah was appointed Vice President, a role she held until her decisive election.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s contributions extend beyond politics. She has received numerous accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Dar es Salaam and recognition for her work in sustainable development and intergenerational leadership.

Married to Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah, former Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, she is also an advocate for children’s community work and literacy initiatives.
