Nimba Political “Godfather” Late Senator Johnson’s Home-going Itinerary Released

The official itinerary for the home-going of the late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, a significant political figure and former rebel leader, has been unveiled. The five-day schedule, from Tuesday, January 14, to Saturday, January 18, 2025, includes events in Monrovia and his home county, Nimba. These arrangements reflect Senator Johnson’s enduring legacy, honoring his political, cultural, and religious contributions to Liberia.

The ceremonies will begin on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in Monrovia, with a removal ceremony at 10:00 AM at the Samuel A. Striker Funeral Palace in Sinkor. Following the removal, the senator’s body will lie in state at the Rotunda of the Capitol Building, offering his colleagues in the Liberian Senate and the public an opportunity to pay their respects. Later that evening, a wake-keeping service will be held at 6:00 PM at Christ Chapel of Faith Ministry on Lovers Street in Paynesville, where Senator Johnson was also a spiritual leader.

On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the senator’s remains will be transported from Monrovia to Nimba County. Upon arrival at 8:00 AM, another wake-keeping service will be held at 6:00 PM in Ganta, one of Nimba’s major cities.

The third day, Thursday, January 16, 2025, will see the senator’s body traveling to Karnplay, leaving Ganta at 8:00 AM. A period of honoring will occur at 10:00 AM at the Nimba County Administration Hall in Sanniquellie. Another wake-keeping service will be held at 6:00 PM in Karnplay in the evening.

The fourth day of the homegoing will begin on Friday, January 17, 2025, with a departure to Bahn City at 8:00 AM. A ceremony to honor the senator’s legacy will occur at 10:00 AM, followed by a 6:00 PM wake-keeping service in Saclepea City.

Saturday, January 18, 2025, will mark the final day of the home-going ceremonies. The procession will leave Saclepea at 8:00 AM for Ganta, where a state funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM at the PYJ Polytechnic University, an institution named after the late senator. A committal ceremony will occur at 2:00 PM in Ganta, where Senator Johnson will rest after the funeral service. A repass will follow at 4:00 PM at the university.

In addition to these formal observances, a traditional four-day feast will begin on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in Nimba County. This cultural celebration will highlight the customs and traditions of the Nimba people, paying homage to Senator Johnson’s deep connection to his roots.

Senator Prince Yormie Johnson was a polarizing figure in Liberia’s history, recognized for his role during the country’s civil war and his subsequent political career. He represented Nimba County in the Liberian Senate, where he was a passionate advocate for his constituents and a strong defender of Nimba’s interests.
