Pres. Boakai Acknowledges Supreme Court Ruling, Says the Problem Remains Unresolved

Monrovia, Liberia- President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has acknowledged the Supreme Court April 23, 2025, ruling in which the court reaffirmed and legitimized Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa’s Speakership.President Boakai, in a late statement on Thursday, April 24, 2025, acknowledged the High Court’s decision while emphasizing that the core issue within the House of Representatives remains unresolved.While addressing the nation, Boakai affirmed his respect for the Court as the highest legal authority in the country but stressed that the division in the House continues to threaten effective governance and public trust.“

As President, I acknowledge the ruling of the Supreme Court,” However, the problem within the House of Representatives remains unresolved,” President Boakai added. The Liberian leader noted that his administration has initiated wide-ranging consultations with national stakeholders, including traditional leaders, in an effort to chart a constitutional and inclusive path forward.Reiterating his commitment to the principles of democracy, the President underscored the importance of maintaining the separation of powers and adhering to the constitutional definition of a quorum for legislative proceedings.

He pledged to continue governing with a legitimate quorum to ensure the effective operation of government.President Boakai expressed deep concern over recent events, including the arson attack on the Capitol Building and fresh reports of vandalism targeting public institutions. “Such acts are meant to create chaos and undermine our democracy,” he warned, adding that police investigations are underway.Continuing, Boakai stated: “Let me be clear: This government will not be held hostage by narrow interests or acts of lawlessness,” the President declared.

He intimated that governance will continue to flourish under his administration, noting that he remain focused on serving the Liberian people. “Governance will continue, and we remain focused on serving the Liberian people,” he asserted. He, however, called on all citizens to remain calm and go about their daily lives in peace, assuring the public that the government is functioning and committed to maintaining law and order.

President Boakai issued a stem reminder to elected government official to uphold the constitution of Liberia.He stated, “To elected leaders, your oath is to the nation and its people—not to personal ambition.” He also appealed for unity, urging citizens to rise above division and stand together in defense of peace and democracy.“

Liberia is bigger than any individual, any party, or any position,” he said. “We will protect our democracy, preserve our peace, and together, move Liberia forward.”President Boakai concluded his statement with a message of hope and resilience, calling for calm, cooperation, and a shared national purpose in navigating this political impasse.
