Monrovia, Liberia – In a move towards bolstering Liberia’s role in global diplomacy, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially announced the formation of the National Steering Committee to spearhead the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The announcement, made on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, signals Liberia’s determination to enhance its influence in international decision-making processes, particularly in matters of security and peace.
The National Steering Committee will be composed of key government officials, civil society leaders, and diplomatic experts, all of whom will work together to coordinate Liberia’s campaign for the prestigious UNSC position. The committee will be led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will serve as Chair, with the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Internal Affairs taking on the roles of Co-Chairs.
In addition to these prominent figures, other members of the committee include high-ranking government ministers, representatives from the country’s civil society, and various youth and religious organizations. Notable participants include the Ministers of Justice, Defense, and Gender, the Director General of the Cabinet, and the National Security Advisor to the President, among others. The committee also includes representatives from the Liberia National Student Union, the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, and the Liberia Council of Churches.
To ensure the effective implementation of Liberia’s campaign strategy, Ambassador Lewis Brown has been appointed as the Secretary of the National Steering Committee. He will oversee the logistical and operational aspects of the campaign, coordinating with the various stakeholders involved in the bid.
In addition to the committee members, a distinguished Advisory Team has been assembled to provide strategic guidance and leverage diplomatic expertise throughout the campaign. The team consists of seasoned diplomats and political figures, including Ambassadors George Wallace, Marjon Kamara, and Nathaniel Barnes, along with key Liberian leaders such as Senator Gbehzongar Findley, Senator Thomas Yayah Nimley, and Hon. Olubanke King Akerele.
The establishment of the National Steering Committee reflects Liberia’s commitment to global peace, security, and multilateral cooperation.
