President Boakai Breaks Ground To Construct Freeport Road Today

President Joseph N. Boakai will officially break ground today Friday, July 3, 2026 for the reconstruction and expansion of the 1.9 kilometer road corroder between the Gabriel Tucker Bridge and the Freeport of Monrovia.

The Liberian and Japanese Governments finalized the road reconstruction agreement in Tokyo, Japan, last March for funding of the project.

A Japanese firm, Dai Nippon Construction is undertaking the reconstruction of the road project expected to be completed within 26 months.

Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel O. Sando said the scope of road project includes full alignment reconfiguration, elevation of the roadway, and installation of drainage and storm water management systems to address flooding challenges.

Minister Sando said ahead of the ground breaking ceremony, the Public Works Minister met this week with representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to ascertain the level of preparedness.

JICA is the hired contractor and consultant of the road project.

Minister Sando spoke at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing held Thursday, July 2, 2026.
