In a decisive move underscoring his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has suspended Mr. Nortu Jappah, Managing Director of the National Insurance Company of Liberia (NICOL), and Mr. Joseph Sando Momolu, Chairman of NICOL’s Board of Directors, over allegations of financial improprieties and failures in board oversight.
The suspension, which took immediate effect, follows Preliminary investigations into NICOL’s operations and governance. According to a statement from the Executive Mansion, the measure is aimed at preserving the integrity of the institution and ensuring that public resources are managed effectively and responsibly.
President Boakai has simultaneously ordered a comprehensive systems audit of NICOL. The audit is expected to uncover the extent of any financial mismanagement and recommend reforms to strengthen governance structures within the institution.
In the interim, Mr. Abdullah S. Swaray, NICOL’s Deputy Managing Director for Administration, has been appointed to serve as Acting Managing Director. Additionally, Mr. Ansumanah Jallah, currently serving as the Board Co-Chair for Finance and Audits, has been designated to act as Board Chairman.
The Executive Mansion emphasized that the president’s actions reflect his administration’s broader agenda to uphold good governance and restore public confidence in state-run institutions.
The suspensions have been met with widespread support from civil society organizations and anti-corruption advocates across the country, who view the move as a critical step toward curbing entrenched corruption in Liberia’s public sector.
President Boakai reiterated his commitment to safeguarding public trust, stating that all steps taken are in the interest of the Liberian people and the rule of law.
