Verity News Responds to ArcelorMittal Press Statement. We Stand By Our Investigative Report. We Are Not Retracting Anything

Verity News has taken note of the press statement by ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) relating to a disturbing video that Verity News investigation uncovered and exposed, where Liberian workers are seen eating from a black plastic on the ground at AML operational area.

AML in its press statement said that Verity News stated that “individuals shown are employees of the company.”

Verity News did not make any such claim. That is false and misleading on the part of AML. Verity News said that the individuals shown in the video are Liberian workers at ArcelorMittal in the operational premises of the company. This paper did not say they are “employees of AML” as falsely stated in AML press statement. Go back and read what Verity News said. Verity News said they are working at AML, and this is a fact.

The workers were hired by a subcontractor of AML and they work at AML. It is important to also note that the work they do is for AML. Is the video authentic? Yes. Are the individuals in the video Liberian workers? Yes. Are they working at or in the premises of AML? Yes. So, where is the incorrect information as claimed by AML? Even the workers were crystal clear in the video: “…this is sorrowful. The men are eating in plastic in ArcelorMittal fence. This is a record for the company to know that we are suffering.”

This is exactly what Verity News said:

“Liberian workers at ArcelorMittal eat food from a plastic on the bare ground in the operational premises of the “multibillion” iron ore company.”

Having said that, this newspaper firmly and fully stands by its investigative report, because the report is authentic, verified, credible, and factual. Verity News has nothing to apologize for and nothing to retract.

In the coming days, we will release more leaked videos, photos, and investigative reports of bad labor practices and disturbing exploitation inside AML.

This newspaper can neither be intimated by any exploitative foreign company that’s suppressing our people for more than two decades now nor can it be threatened by any high authority from doing its investigative work.

We will always stand for the truth and the ethical standards that professional journalism espouses, and we will always stand by the PEOPLE over PROFIT. The entrenched and unprecedented exploitation of Liberian workers across foreign mines, plantations, concessions, and businesses in Liberia has to STOP now. This paper will continue to fight for the Liberian people especially Liberian workers.
