A communication from the House’s Majority Bloc mandating Representative Edward Flomo appeared before it was rejected.
The representative rejected the communication, claiming that it should be sent to the Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, who according to him, is the legitimate person to receive and act upon such communication.
“I present you sincere compliments and hereby write to acknowledge receipt of the communication sent to me by your office on November 12, 2024, under the instructions of the Honourable House of Representatives (IN SESSION)-inviting me to appear before the Body on Thursday, November 14, 2004, at 10 am, in the Joint Chamber of the Legislature,” the letter of response from the Montserrado Lawmaker stated.
Representative Edward Papay Flomo told the Majority Bloc to submit such a communication in the “original or main” chamber, where embattled Speaker Koffa presides.
“I hereby mandate you to inform said Body, the Honourable House of Representatives (IN SESSION), to present said communication to the Office of the Speaker, Clir. J. Fonati Koffa or attend the Session in the main or original Chamber of the House of Representatives on Thursday, November 14, 2024, to permit me to submit myself to the investigation”, the letter stated.
The Majority Bloc’s mandate to Rep. Flomo is to obtain information related to an investigation launched against the speaker.
Montserrado District #3 Representative Edward Papay Flomo is among the pro-Koffa lawmakers who have vowed to remain loyal supporters of Cllr. Fonati Koffa’s speakership.
Recently, the Majority Bloc, a split within the House of Representatives headed by Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah, a CDC mate to Speaker Koffa, constituted a committee investigating the embattled speaker.
The Majority Bloc announced the committee’s formation during a special meeting on Monday.
The committee, chaired by a senior lawmaker from the majority bloc, was tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the claims against Koffa and issuing a public report with recommendations.
The allegations against Speaker Koffa center on several claims of financial mismanagement and corruption. Critics argue that Koffa has used his position to benefit his allies and advance their commercial interests.
They expressly point to suspected kickbacks from government contracts and the manipulation of legislative procedures to funnel state resources to private ventures linked to him and his associates.
“These accusations are serious, and the public deserves answers. We cannot afford to let these allegations undermine the integrity of the House of Representatives,” said Representative Agnes Reeves, who introduced the resolution to form the investigative committee.
While Speaker Koffa has vehemently denied the allegations, claiming they are politically motivated, his critics insist that the investigation is necessary to restore trust in the country’s governance institutions.
In addition to corruption allegations, Koffa is accused of indulging in conflicts of interest. According to documents obtained by various media outlets, Koffa allegedly has direct financial ties to businesses that have benefited from government contracts passed through the legislature.
