Alfred Johnson, the Director of Press at the Liberian Senate, has urged public servants across all government ministries and agencies to demonstrate unwavering commitment, professionalism, and diligence, emphasizing that such qualities are crucial for Liberia’s growth and development.
During his remarks on the importance of hard work, Director Johnson highlighted that productivity reflects dedication and a pathway to career advancement and recognition. “Commitment, simplicity, and diligence in the workplace result in tangible outcomes, with the added benefit of being acknowledged and promoted,” he noted.
As the head of the Senate’s Bureau of Press, Director Johnson has been key in fostering professionalism among journalists covering Senate activities. His efforts to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination have not gone unnoticed. This culminated in a recent honour from the civil society organization Citizens United for Better Liberia, which recognized Johnson as “Director of the Year” for his exceptional leadership and effectiveness in public engagement.
The ceremony, held at the Capitol Building, celebrated Johnson’s role in improving communication and transparency in government. It commended his efforts to provide timely updates through the Liberian Senate’s official social media platforms, press releases, and other public engagement activities. The recognition included a ceremonial gowning, symbolizing his contributions to promoting democracy and transparency in Liberia.
In his acceptance speech, Director Johnson thanked both the past and current leadership of the Liberian Senate for their ongoing support, particularly Senate Pro-Tempore Emeritus Albert Chie and the current Pro-Tempore, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence. Despite facing challenges, he acknowledged the backing of the Senate’s Press and Public Affairs Department. “Since my promotion to Director, I have received immense support from the leadership despite some challenges along the way,” Johnson said.
Furthermore, Director Johnson called on government employees to embrace values such as honesty, accountability, and commitment in their roles. He emphasized that these principles are essential for fostering trust, advancing development, and securing continued support from leadership at all levels.
In his acceptance remarks, Johnson expressed gratitude to Citizens United for Better Liberia and dedicated the honour to his team, the reporters assigned to the Senate, and the leadership of the 54th and 55th Legislatures. “As a former broadcaster with the state-owned Liberian Broadcasting System, I have learned the importance of interpersonal skills, content creation, and communication strategies in public relations. These remain key elements I will continue to uphold in leading this department,” Johnson stated.
Kessely Barzah, head of Citizens United for Better Liberia, praised Director Johnson’s dedication to public engagement and transparency, saying, “This award underscores his commitment to fostering democracy and advancing national development for the benefit of all Liberians.”
Director Johnson’s recognition reminds us of the importance of strong work ethics and effective communication in promoting accountability and growth within government institutions.
