The Supreme Court of Liberia has overturned the murder conviction of Valington B. Kaiser, popularly known as “Bishop,” and ordered his immediate release and the restoration of his civil rights.
Kaiser had been serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of his girlfriend, 18-year-old Fatu Blasuwoah, who was found dead with multiple stab wounds at the old LPRC compound in Gardnerville.
The case began in May 2022 when Blasuwoah’s body was discovered. Kaiser was later arrested after police said CCTV footage and other evidence linked him to the killing. Investigators also recovered a green-handled knife, which was later presented as evidence during the trial.
Kaiser was subsequently indicted and tried for murder at Criminal Court “A” at the Temple of Justice. During the trial, prosecutors presented six witnesses and relied heavily on CCTV footage and forensic evidence. The defense also called witnesses, including Kaiser, to challenge the prosecution’s case.
On March 1, 2023, a 12-member jury found Kaiser guilty of murder. Eight days later, Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie sentenced him to life imprisonment after denying the defense’s motion for a new trial.
However, in a ruling delivered Friday, the Supreme Court found serious and irreconcilable inconsistencies in the evidence presented against Kaiser. The Court specifically pointed to discrepancies surrounding the CCTV footage and the forensic examination of the alleged murder weapon.
Delivering the opinion of the Court, Justice Yusuf D. Kaba said the inconsistencies created reasonable doubts that must be resolved in favor of the accused.
Justice Kaba emphasized the fundamental principle of criminal justice that where doubt exists over a defendant’s guilt, that doubt must benefit the defendant.
He further invoked the long-standing principle that it is better for ten guilty persons to go free than for one innocent person to be wrongly convicted.
Based on those findings, the Supreme Court overturned Kaiser’s conviction, ordered his immediate release from custody, and restored his civil rights, bringing an end to a case that has remained one of the most closely watched murder prosecutions in recent years.
