Lower Margibi County – A group of suspected illegal miners, most of whom are reported to be Malian nationals, was intercepted by security authorities along the Farmington River in the Hydro Community, Firestone, Lower Margibi County.
The individuals were taken to the Roberts International Airport (RIA) Police Detachment for questioning as authorities investigate allegations that they were attempting to engage in illegal mining activities while allegedly posing as licensed miners.
The alleged leader of the group, identified only as Kane, declined to speak to the media when approached.
Authorities have not disclosed what mineral or natural resource the group is suspected of mining. The Liberia National Police (LNP), the Plant Protection Department (PPD), and the Liberia Immigration Service are involved in the ongoing investigation, while Verity News is monitoring developments.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no formal charges have been announced.
